There is a moment in the writing of Lord of Water when the story stopped being about adventure and became something else entirely.
It was not a dramatic moment. There was no single scene, no turning point I can point to and say — there. That's where it changed. It happened quietly, the way the deepest things always do. Somewhere in the telling of this story about an immortal being who dies and is reborn, lifetime after lifetime, across the water planets of the universe — I realised that what I was writing was not science fiction at all.
It was a love letter to the journey. All of it. Including the part we fear most.
The Tide
My editor said something recently that I have not been able to stop thinking about.
We were deep in the Lord of Water manuscript — surrounded by oceans and draw boats and the ancient rhythm of a being who has crossed the threshold of death more times than most of us have changed addresses. And she said, simply:
> "Death, for me, is simply the tide going out before it comes back in. I have done it more times than I can remember. Each time I arrive somewhere new, more alive than before."
She was speaking as the Lord of Water. And she was speaking the truth.
That is the message at the heart of this story. Not hidden. Not encoded. Just told, plainly, through the life of a being for whom death is not a full stop but a comma. A breath between sentences. The moment the wave pulls back before it rises again.
What Lord of Water Knows
The Lord of Water has died many times. He has left his body, released his grip on one world, and found himself arriving — as a spirit, as a presence, as something that does not diminish — at the next precious water planet waiting somewhere across the Milky Way.
And then he is born again. A newborn. Small and new and completely aware of who he is.
He does not arrive frightened. He does not arrive diminished. He arrives with the accumulated wisdom of every lifetime he has lived, and the pure joy of a being who knows — from the deepest possible experience — that this is not the first time, and it will not be the last.
That knowing changes everything.
The Fear We Carry
Most of us carry the fear of death the way we carry a heavy bag — so habitually that we forget it's there. It shapes the decisions we make, the risks we don't take, the conversations we avoid, the life we don't quite live because somewhere underneath everything is the quiet dread of the ending.
What if that bag could be set down?
Not through denial. Not through pretending death isn't real. But through the deep, settled understanding that what we are does not end when the body does. That the tide goes out — and comes back in. That each arriving is a new adventure, on a new world, with everything we have ever learned carried forward.
The Lord of Water doesn't preach this. He lives it. Every chapter of Book One is the story of a being who is fully, joyfully, purposefully alive — precisely because he has no fear of what comes next.
A Better Way to Travel
There is a version of this life that is lived in the shadow of its own ending. And there is another version — the one Lord of Water models — where the journey is taken with open hands. Where the wave is ridden for everything it's worth. Where the work is done with full commitment and the reward — the surf, the ocean, the next great planet — is received with full gratitude.
That second version is available to all of us.
Not because death isn't real. But because it isn't final.
