Editor: "Chapter 5 is where the book earns its title promise. Four chapters of setup, and then 'All in!' — and suddenly the reader understands what a draw boat actually is. The whole chapter is built on withheld information: boats with no sails, no engines, no visible way to see what drove them. Then Shane looks over the port side and sees the living keel, and the mystery pays off in one image. What drew you to the living keel idea originally? Was it there from the first draft, or did the draw boats start as something more conventional?"
Mike: "Great question. I just wrote it without even thinking about it. I was just on the journey. This is the first time I've ever thought about it. Hi-Sun and the draw boats were naturally there when they arrived."
Editor: "That tracks with how the chapter reads. The reveal doesn't feel engineered — it unfolds at the pace of Shane noticing it. He's confused about why they're not pitching with the swells, then it dawns on him, then Gary waves him to the port side. That's not an author constructing a mystery; that's a passenger on the boat working it out in real time. There's an echo of the book's own themes in that. Shane says his power works only when he plays — the harder he tries, the less it works. Sounds like the writing worked the same way."
Mike: "I feel the point in this chapter is when Hi-Sun lunges off the jetty and right into motion. I can still feel that motion when it first happened. That exhilaration — and all I could do was laugh. It brings back that feeling right there, reading it."
Editor: "And that's exactly what's on the page: 'Mila and I both lost it, laughing together with pure excitement.' You weren't writing a reaction. You were recording one."
